A CN local emerges from a long, narrow, curved gap between two warehouses as it approaches Garfield Ave. at Menasha, WI on 18 Jun. '17. They have just finished servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) east of Washington St. on Doty Island. The scene is framed by the former C&NW depot/yard office at left and the C&NW freight house at right. The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the Twin Cities is about 750 feet to the south (right). The depot/yard office and freight house were built by the C&NW in 1965.

Description:
CN local sorts cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Jul. '17. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.

CN local passes behind the former C&NW depot after servicing Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jul. '17. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St. to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

CN local crosses N. Lake St. past Eggers Industries as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 23 Aug. '17. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Train was likely returning from Waupaca.

Canadian National usually works Oshkosh at night, running a turn from Neenah. The local is caught here on the east side of the Jackson Street grade crossing. It is between Jackson Street (State Road 76) and Main on the north end of town. The train will be headed to switch covered hoppers stored on the west end of this former CNW industrial spur used in service with Bemis Performance and Pacur. A good sign here is two empty center beam bulkhead flats that could have only come from Noffke Lumber. That is a good sign of activity at the lumber yard.

A local returns to the yard from Waupaca on the main line in the foreground with two locomotives, CN 4705 and IC 9623. A through freight on the passing siding was preparing to set out and pick up some cars and had two locomotives, CN 2331 and CN 5616. Hidden behind the through freight, another local was returning from Menasha and points beyond with over 30 covered hoppers and had one locomotive, IC 3107.

CN local crosses Appleton St. as it services Intertape Polymer Group, IPG, 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, from the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 8 Sep. '17. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location here on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. CN local crosses Millview Dr. and prepares to take the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Sep. '17. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen along Millview Dr. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill stood to the left for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, Neenah, WI 54956 (out of frame to left), and yet another Affinity clinic at 101 Main St. occupy the sight of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. Given local obsession with surface parking, as opposed to more efficient use of urban land afforded by parking ramps, numerous old homes were acquired and destroyed for a parking lot out of frame to the right. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah.

Sherwood Elevator, N599 Military Rd., Sherwood, WI, has been owned, operated, and expanded by the Kress family since they purchased it in 1951. Their grain terminal, out of frame to the right, has a capacity of 1 million bushels. Unfortunately the elevator has not received rail service for quite a while.

It’s the same facility, but the address changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. The remnants of a spur lead to what was once an overhead door to the left of the locomotive (underneath the company's sign). The rails are still in place, but the turnout was removed quite a while ago (the facility still receives rail service (covered hoppers and tank cars) from the opposite end of the building).

A CN local heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 27 May '18. Locomotive is just coming off of the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal and is crossing one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the canal was excavated). Local was headed back to Neenah. The facility which dominates the scene is currently home to Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI. They purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities plant in Jun. '14. The track in the foreground originates at the former C&NW main line (behind me) and is used to service U.S. Paper Mills Corp. on Washington St.

IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705
Description:
A pair of CN locals face-off on the yard lead at the north end of the former SOO yard along Union St. at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Near local was waiting to return to the yard from Menasha and had one locomotive, IC 9568. Far local, throwing a little smoke, was preparing to cross over to the passing siding and head toward Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah.

EJE 703, CN 4711 and CN 4705
Description:
While EJE 703 sorts cars, a local passes by at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. Local had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Aug. '19. It looks like the train was headed for Waupaca. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Looking down the platform of the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot reveals a CN local momentarily fouling Garfield Ave. as it works at the north end of the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. The depot was built in 1893 to replace the original ca. 1861 depot. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm, 500 N. Commercial St. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located on S. Commercial St., near Galloway Co., 601 S. Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet behind me). It was razed after the new depot was completed. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot.

The TC Transcontinental, Inc., facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river in the background. The C&NW bridge is hidden by the nearer, former joint MILW/SOO bridge (also in use by CN). This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Neenah was held 23 Jun. '18).

A CN local pauses on a remnant of the former C&NW main line near the Loop-the-Lake Trail as it prepares to spot a boxcar at U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., at Menasha, WI, at 1426 hours on 2 Sep. '19. The idled Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., stands at left. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to Tom Danz, who had joined the company in 1999, in Mar. '14; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. When the closure was announced, he claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking, and high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI and the George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history (except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware). Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., can be seen beyond that. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. This small, mostly industrial island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed). This view was only available to trespassers until the Loop-the-Lake Trail opened last year. Loop-the-Lake was completed in order to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held 23 Jun. '18.

A CN local approaches Washington St. as it emerges from U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small, mostly industrial island for many years. This island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed). Near the center of the scene, you can see a yellow tow motor/fork lift bridge that normally spans the tracks and needs to be raised when the local is servicing the mill. Boy, did I ever receive some suspicious glares from some paranoid employees while I was standing on the public sidewalk, next to the public thoroughfare, waiting for the locomotive to emerge from this facility.
