Title:  NKP 2-8-4 #759 - Nickel Plate Road
Description:  This interesting photo was taken by an unknown photographer while Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire #759 was heading up one of the fan excursions it led while operational at Steamtown National Historic Site. Definitely a more "modern" way of loading coal than a traditional coaling tower used to be and far more fans watching than used to at a coaling tower too.. Note the Western Maryland Alco S2 #126 which headed up the coaling train. It would be retired two years later. Note on the back of the photo states "NKP 759 on train AJ-1 and AJ-2 being loaded at Cumberland." No photographer was listed for this action photo.

Description:  My dad (Charles Knox Freericks) took this picture of my brother and me (I'm on the steps) on our favorite engine, Nickel Plate Road S2 Berkshire #759, which had returned to Steamtown after a few years in excursion service. This is still the ultimate steam engine to me, and though I was ten, I have the most vivid memories of this day, learning about F. Nelson Blount. Built in August of 1944 by Lima, it was part of NKP's third order of Berkshires. Overhauled by the NKP in Conneaut, Ohio in May of 1958, it was the last engine so overhauled as the rest of the steam locomotives there began to be scrapped immediately.
