Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

A pair of visitors from out-of-town lead a CN through freight along Hwy. 41, past American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., and approaching the Hwy. G overpass, while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 28 Jul. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The SOO rails run parallel between the train and the highway.

A trio of interesting and colorful foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers along Hwy. 41 and approaching the Hwy. G overpass while headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Snells, WI on 27 Apr. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. The former C&NW rails, also in use by CN, run parallel behind the brush to the left of the train.

I believe it is owned by RGL Logistics, 1715/1725 Dixie Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Town of Neenah). Previous occupants of the facility include Checker Logistics and Warehouse Specialists, Inc.

A CN local traverses the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 2 Aug. '18. Train had two locomotives, GTW 4927 and IC 3115. The local is returning from Little Chute and Kaukauna. It paused in front of the depot/yard office for a few minutes and is now approaching S. Perkins St. as it heads for the far, southwestern end of the yard, where it will pick up a string of cars on its way back to Neenah. GBW 115 rests in the background near the center of the photograph.

Description:
A CN local bisects the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill and approaches N. Mead St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 6 Aug. '18. Founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc. in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to a new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. The name changed to Appvion, Inc., on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18, and the greedy, corporate scumbags were permitted to cheat the employees out of $40 million in retirement benefits. Train was heading back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna.

In the background, a container train approaches the W. Bell St. overpass. Container train had two locomotives, CN 2259 and CN 2156. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about half-a-mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The silo of American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., an active rail customer, is visible in the background, near the center of the photograph. A remnant of the former C&NW main line can be seen at far left, on the other side of the clump of trees.

A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it heads northeast past the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Aug. '18. The beige facility in the background is Voith (Voith Paper Fabric & Roll Systems, Inc.), 375 Byrd Ave. They have two spurs, but the turnout which once connected them to active rails has been gone for quite a while. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are visible beyond that. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about half-a-mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The silo of American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., an active rail customer, is visible in the background to the right. A remnant of the former C&NW main line can be seen at left.

CN 4721
Description:
CN 4721 crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge as it heads northeast at Menasha, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Neenah was held 23 Jun. '18). The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The Coveris facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge. At left, a fisherman or two are plying their luck in the shallows.

An interesting CN local parallels Pacific St. as it heads south via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 12 Aug. '18. Train consisted of two locomotives and a caboose. I was thrilled to espy WC 16 bringing up the rear of the consist. It was awesome to see a former MILW caboose on former MILW rails, and it isn't very often that I get to watch a caboose in a moving train. The 9th St. grade crossing is in the background.

A CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This was my first encounter with a train here since the new Loop-the-Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank. The Neenah-Menasha YMCA, Island Shores Retirement Community, N. Commercial St. Bridge, and Neenah Paper mill (an active rail customer) are visible in the background to the right.

A CN local crosses W. Prospect Ave./Hwy. BB while picking up a string of cars from the southwest end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Aug. '18. When the local reaches the middle of the road, it will be spanning 3 communities at once in a peculiar spot of the sometimes confusing local borders. This section of the road is the border separating the Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI to the north (left) and Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI tntil 14 Apr. '16) to the south (right). The locomotives and a couple of freight cars are in the Town of Grand Chute, thanks to an unnatural jog in the border, the remainder of the train is in Appleton. The former SOO main line is just out-of-frame to the left.

A CN local bisects the intersection of S. Outagamie St. and W. Melvin St. (background left) and approaches W. 2nd St. while headed southwest past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Aug. '18. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna and was slowing to halt in front of the depot/yard office. The rails leading to the left are the yard lead. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gletchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. By ’67 it was the Junction Tavern, owned by at least two different people until at least ‘71. At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard to set out and pick up caps at Neenah, WI on 18 Aug. '18. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Lirtle Lake Butte des Morts c`me right up to the north leg of the wye, partially visible to the left of the lead locomotive. At right, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opdning in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland K~mpo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

The foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen beyond the dumpsters at left. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train to the right was backing into the yard to set out and pick up cars and had two locomotives. Train to the left was just passing through.

A CN through freight passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing and approaches the N. Appleton St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 24 Aug. '18. A pair of tall buildings loom in the background at left. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St. The taller one is the former Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., erected in 1952. Since AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building. There used to be six tracks here, only the main line remains.

A CN local bisects the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill, 825 E. Wisconsin Ave. (background), passes the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St. (partially visible at right), and crosses N. Lawe St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Aug. '18. Founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc. in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to a new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. Appleton changed its name to Appvion, Inc. on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18, and the greedy, corporate scumbags were permitted to cheat the employees out of $40 million in retirement benefits. The Tuttle Press Co. was founded at Elgin, IL, in 1898. They moved to Appleton in 1901, where they built a facility next to the Wisconsin Tissue Paper Co. on John St. They constructed a new facility at N. Union St. and E. Hancock St. in ’05. Over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block, as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. The company was purchased by Northern Paper Mills, Green Bay, on 18 Sep. ‘29. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a vile holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-‘70s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early ‘83, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. around 1990. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper and especially gift wrapping paper. There haven’t been any business signs on the building for several years. The nearest track used to split into several spurs to serve Tuttle Press, Luvata (formerly Valley Cast), Russel Metals, and Appvion, only the latter is an active rail customer. The guard rail at left marks the spot of the former N. Union St. grade crossing. Train was heading back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna.
