Description:  Southern Pacific SD40T-2 8362 and B30-7 7805 were pulling a Louisville & Nashville train towards the railroad's GENTILLY YARD at Read Boulevard. Title:  L&N GP38-2 4105
Description:  Louisville & Nashville GP38-2 4105 leads a southbound train into New Orleans, as it approaches the railroad's Gentilly Yard. Seaboard Coast Line U36B 1822 is parked on the Michoud Siding with a crewless run-through train for the Southern Pacific, waiting for permission from the SP to deliver it. Michoud Siding extended for six miles from the north end of Gentilly Yard, and it was very common for run-through trains to be parked here for hours, or even days, waiting to be delivered to either the SP or the MP.

Description:  Nearly-new New Orleans Public Belt boxcars were on an Illinois Central Gulf train in Kenner, Louisiana. Car 3424 had been built in April 1978, while the 3301 had been built September 1977. Description:  Two sets of transfer power pause at the Missouri Pacific's engine house at Avondale Yard, just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. The set on the left includes MP15DC 1554, the last of ten such units (1545-1554) built for the MP in February and March 1975 and initially assigned here. The set on the right includes L&N GP30 1013, L&N GP9 526, MP GP15-1 1612 and an unidentified Mop geep. The diesel shop was built shortly after WWII, and was razed after it was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Description:  Powered by an eclectic set of locomotives, a Southern Pacific EXTRA WEST was heading out of the railroad's Avondale Yard, just west of New Orleans. Southern Railway GP35 2680, SD40-2 3257 and an unidentified SP B30-7 were providing the motive power as the train rolled across the George Street grade crossing. The 2680 was displaying white lights and was wearing one flag!

Description:  New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal SW8 No. 3 was at the terminal's car shop, having just been repainted from blue-and-orange into Amtrak colors, but not yet lettered. This was one of three SW8's - Nos. 1-3 - built in December 1953 for use at the new terminal. No. 2 was sold around 1960, but Nos. 1 and 3 survived into the Amtrak era. Both were repainted into Amtrak colors, and were sold to NASA in 1990.

Title:  Southern Car 1056 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN
Description:  The car host, identifiable by his red jacket and green cap, was waving to the photographer from the front end of Southern Railway car 1056 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, as it brought up the rear of an excursion train leaving New Orleans. The 13-car train consisted of Mikado 4501, water tender W.T.50, NRHS sleeper IMPERIAL EMBLEM, combine 726, coaches 1041, 1042 and 1043, baggage car 4061, coaches 1067, 1068, 1081, 1086, 1087 and 3659, and observation car 1056 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN. It was crossing Bayou St. John on a bridge that had been built by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. of Leavenworth, Kansas in 1905, but this was not its original location.

Description:  Southern Pacific Job 104 had just arrived back at AVONDALE YARD, at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, on a westbound train with NINE engines: five transfer units - GP35 6670, GP9R’s 3311, 3885, 3389, and 3410 - and a set of road power from a Louisville & Nashville run-through train - U33C 8751, SD45 8953, SSW GP40-2 7650 and SP GP35 6555. Here they were at the Avondale Garden Road grade crossing, and the west end of the yard.

Description:  Southern Pacific Job 104 was descending the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE with 12 locomotives and Southern Railway run-through train No. 193. The train had Job 104’s own units – GP35 6670 with GP9R’s 3311, 3885, 3389, and 3410, a set of power from a Louisville & Nashville run-through train - U33C 8751, SD45 8953, SSW GP40-2 7650 and SP GP35 6555, and the power that was on No. 193 – Southern SD40-2 3223 and SD45 3130 with SP B30-7 7813.

Description:  Southern Railway flat car 900099, end-door box car 900098 and Exhibit Car 24 were parked on the railroad's St. Louis Street Line near City Park Avenue. The freight cars were used to transport the railroad's replica of the BEST FRIEND OF CHARLESTON and its two coach, which were giving the public rides nearby.

Description:  St. Louis-San Francisco SW1500 357 was working in Tulsa, Oklahoma, home of the railroad's CHEROKEE YARD. The locomotive was from the Frisco's last order for this model, eight units built in January 1973. It was subsequently Burlington Northern 62 and then Burlington Northern Santa Fe 3442.

ICG 6324
Title:  ICG 6324
Description:  The 6324 was one of 21 former Southern Railway SD24's which the Illinois Central Gulf purchased and eventually rebuilt into SD20's, and at least some of these units ran around on the ICG like this until they went through Paducah shop. The 6324 was remanufactured into SD20 2019 in October 1980.
