One of the last Mountain type 4-8-2 Alco built locomotives for the Missouri Pacific standing here at the St Louis Union Station with its passenger consist. The loco lasted in service until being retired in April of 1956 at North Little Rock, AR. Specifics - class, MT-73-1927, 73" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 396,000 lb, tractive effort of 63,663 lb. All ten in this last group from Alco had power reverse gear, BK stokers, Worthington 4 1/4 BL 2 feed water heaters, cast steel locomotive beds, and roller bearings. Unknown photographer. |

Over a five year period starting in 1905, Baldwin, Brooks and Schenectady delivered 172 2-8-0 Consolidations to Missouri Pacific. This loco was delivered in July of 1910 from Brooks and served from 1910 to 1949 when it was scrapped. Its boiler however went to MP #41. This 4-6-2 Pacific (configuration actually named after Missouri Pacific) was built by Alco-Brooks in July 1902 as St Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern #1620 but renumbered in 1905 to #6514 when locos from the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern were merged with the MP. The loco lasted unti October of 1947 when it was retired at Sedalia, MO. Specs - class P-69, 69" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 20x26" cylinders, engine weight of 185,00 lb, tractive effort of 25,623 lb. Eventually superheated in 1916. Description: |
Double heading a long string of freight cars are MP 1706 & MP 1920 at the 21 Street Yard in St Louis. #1706 was originally built for the St Louis, Iron Moutnain & Southern Rwy by Alco in 1916 but acquired by MP in 1917 during the merger. It was a SF-63 class with 63" drivers and could produce a boiler pressure of 188.5 psi to deliver to its 30"x30" cylinders. It had an engine weight of 370,000 lb and a tractive effort of 68,668 lb. The last of the class was retired by 1955. MP 2-8-4 #1920 was a 1930 Lima built Berkshire but was converted to 4-8-4 75" drivers in 1940-42. Comment on the back reads "#75 running extra at 2pm". R.J.
