Album Info:I lived in Queens Village for a little under four years. It was a great place to see the action. The station was on an embankment, and had a four track signal bridge at the east end, with PRR position lights, as was LIRR practice. This made for a great photo prop. The station waiting area was also intact, and could be worked into a shot. And there was lots of action, all day long.

FA old style
Title:  FA old style
Description:  The LIRR was in paint scheme transition in the late 1970s. They had received their new GP 38s-their first EMDs-in a blue and white scheme inspired by the Milwaukee Roads bicentennial unit. Other power was starting to make the transition, but the new scheme had not made it onto everything yet, and the FAs were still in the gray with blue stripe at the window band level. One of them is going away under the signals on an Oyster Bay train, hanging onto its old paint just a little longer.

The race is on
Title:  The race is on
Description:  It wont turn out to be much of a contest. The diesel train on the right is rolling along at track speed, and will enter Queens interlocking after passing my position on the platform, moving over to Main Line track 2 for the trip to Hicksville, then on to Ronkonkoma. The train of M 1s is slowing for the stop at Queens Village. To the left of the trains is one of the more unusual parts of the LIRR, the Queens Village Team Track. It was a small yard with a couple of tracks and a crane for use by receivers who did not have their own siding. By the late 70s, most of the cars there were on various LIRR mow assignments. I dont think I ever saw a revenue car there.

Oyster Bay train east
Title:  Oyster Bay train east
Description:  A train bound for Oyster Bay rolls east through Queens Village. Oyster Bay trains tended to be short, since some of their stations were convenient to others on the Port Washington Branch, or to Mineola with a short drive, so patronage was lighter than other branches.

Surfs up!!
Title:  Surfs up!!
Description:  Long Island for a time painted their GP38s witha red stripe. The inspiration was their Bicentennial unit, 252, which was painted that way when it arrived in 1976. Eventually all the big road power got the treatment, which only lasted a few years.

Pushing past the team tracks
Title:  Pushing past the team tracks
Description:  An Oyster Bay train pushes through Queens Village on its way to Jamaica. At left is the Queens Village team yard, an anachronism on most railroads by this time, but a place where cars could be unloaded by consignees without a siding of their own, not unusual in the city. By this time it was used mostly by MOW crews, but still got revenue cars.

Also in Queens interlocking limits is the connection to the now out of service Belmont Spur, which leaves the Main Line here to reach Belmont Racetrack, home of the Belmont Stakes, a triple crown event.

Oyster Bay train with MP 15s
Title:  Oyster Bay train with MP 15s
Description:  Oyster Bay trains were small consists most of the day, due to the relatively light patronage on the branch. As a result, trains often ran with MP 15s fore and aft, such as this westbound passing under the signals at Queens. The tower is seen under the second signal from the left, beyond the train.
