Album Info:The Columbia River Gorge stretches approximately 80 miles along the Oregon-Washington Border. Between Vancouver, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and Pasco, Washington, BNSF and UP's mainlines parallel each other on either side of the Columbia River. The BNSF, on the former SP&S route, runs on the Washington side of the river, while UP's route follows across the river and border in Oregon.

Barges on the Columbia
Title:  Barges on the Columbia
Description:  Two barges pass each other on the Columbia River just east of The Dalles (the BNSF grain train is in BNSFs Wishram Yard). On the Oregon (opposite) side of the river is Interstate 84, connecting Portland and Boise, and two sets of tracks. The lower track, passing under I84, is the double-tracked Union Pacific mainline. The upper line is the single-tracked BNSF Oregon Trunk Subdivision. This line branches off the BNSF Fallbridge Subdivision just west of Wishram, crosses over the river and into Oregon, then, after running parallel to the UP tracks for a short time, turn south, through Bend, before combining with the UP Cascade Subdivision in Chemult. This line was part of the former SP&S mainline, connecting central Oregon with Spokane, Vancouver, and points north.

Title:  Smoking GEs Outbound
Description:  With a fresh crew on board, BNSF 4305 trails a cloud of smoke as it lugs a northbound grain train past the Vancouver yard office. 4305, in typical GE fashion, can be heard from several hundred yards away, its FDL16 engine puttering along as it gets the heavy train moving. The cloud of smoke was visible long before the train itself popped out from behind the yard office.
