Yesterday evening, I got word that an rare train with an even more rare leader was going to be running east on the CF&E today. Last week, the FRA Geometry Train ran in to Fort Wayne and would be continuing east the following week. Usually NS provides the power for this train, but somehow, someway, a CN SD40-2W got tacked on the front, and ended up making it this far and would remain on the train well into Ohio. I can bet the former PRR has not seen a SD40-2W leader since NS was regularly running trains along it nearly 2 decades ago, so it was a no brainer to head up to Fort Wayne and make chase of it. When I got up there, the FRA crew members were just arriving onto the property so I had some time to get some photos of some other trains. Surprisingly, a loaded welded rail train was sitting right at the distant PL. While it isnt the best photo, its the first time Ive gotten to shoot a train (though stopped) beside this signal, and it was the final active PRR signal I had to get a shot of that remains on the CF&E side of the former PRR Fort Wayne Line. |

My next attempted shot for CFE 08 was going to be by the turned PLs on the east side of Ada, OH. When I crossed the IORY tracks at Sugar Street I could see the LSL building. Low and behold, the leader definitely was not orange as I could see the nose of the lead engine was yellow. That meant the leader was one of the LTE SD50s or one of the OHCR units. Regardless, the train was still building, so even if I did decide to come back for it I knew I should have a little time. I raced out to Ada and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. And after ages of waiting, the LSL got track to Tremont with the OHCR 4030 on the front. Ive always had such terrible luck getting the OHCR units leading the LSL, so I decided to drop my chase with CFE 08 and head toward the DT&I to chase the LSL to Tremont. I decided to go south since I wasnt sure how much headway it would make since I was a solid 20 miles east of the tracks. I decided to go south of Saint Johns, OH to the very, very tiny unincorporated town of Slater, OH where I set up shop beside some derelict DT&I codeline. After some waiting, the train appeared around the corner, with not only one, but both OHCR units, the tunnel motor, and two orange units. I think I made the right choice coming here! |

Next shot was Jackson Center, where I set up shop just south of Plastipak. Rainwater tends to gather in the ditch right beside CR 22 so I figured a relection shot would make for a nice frame. Unfortunately for me the puddle was bigger than what it looked and the grass was also taller than it appeared, so not only did the reflection not come out well, but the camera focused on some blades of grass instead of the train. Chasing the LSL was a completely unexpected venture, but there was no way I was going to let go of one of the OHCR units leading. Ironically, however, a friend of mine and I had decided that we were going to chase the LSL tomorrow several weeks in advance. Since we had planned to cut the northbound chase at Quincy, I decided to leave everything south of Quincy for tomorrows chase. I went north to the diamond and was greeted by dead silence on CSX. There was, however, maintenance working north of the diamond on the DT*I with a tamper. That held up the LSL south of Quincy for a bit. After some more tamping north of the diamond, the tamper received permission across CSX rails and into the siding just south of where Im sitting to allow the LSL to continue northward. |

The LSL rounds the bend into Saint Johns, OH. This has always been a massive bucket list shot for me. I am sitting on the crest of a hill by the road that parallels the tracks while the tracks basically stay level. There arent a lot of shots like this in this part of the state. This just happens to be a unique scenario. The code line polls certainly add to it! |
