As I’ve been out of the Northeast railroading game for over 5 years now, and it is not too often I get one leading through, much less in a consist.
I also saw the square projections on the rear upper hood, and said to myself, “Self, that looks like a SD90 hood." As it was heading north, I jumped into the trusty rusty railfanning ‘Burb to Newby, and Deb opted to join me as well.
Fortunately, it was taking the siding at Newby to let a southbound pass, and not running through to Teague; so I was able to capture several nice images despite playing peek a boo with the sun..
Upon getting home and doing the research, I learned that it was in fact a rebuilt SD9043. Rebuilt by Progress Rail shops:
CP 9100-9160 (SD9043MAC): Units were at one time up for sale in "as is" condition, but no buyer was ever found. Some units had been intermittently placed into freight service to help combat motive power shortages. Thirty units were rebuilt in 2019 as EMD SD70ACUs and renumbered 7000-7029. It was later announced that the rebuild order would be raised to 60 units total, using the remainder of the 58 usable cores from the long-stored CP SD90MAC fleet plus buying two SD90MACs from the Union Pacific to make up the difference. In 2021, Canadian Pacific purchased 40 more SD90MACs from Union Pacific for further continuation of the SD70ACU rebuild program.
