CSXT 7008
Description:
CSXT 7008 (CW44AH) as a front-train DPU on a southbound manifest at Brookley Siding, being around 10-15 cars from the lead engines and about 75-100 cars from the rearmost car. I have not seen a DPU this close to the lead engines before, so this was quite the surprise.

Here we see CSX Q602-13, a mixed freight, headed through downtown Mobile with a UP AC4400CW leading the way. Today’s Q602 had all UP power, since CSX made a power deal with UP. They will trade off power in New Orleans, and the reason for this is because CSX has sold so many locomotives that they are having to ask to borrow others, and even taking old engines (like C40-8Ws) out of storage! For us as railfans, this is an amazing opportunity to see the locomotives not common around here on CSX.

I believe this was the power for either NS 55Z or NS 56Z, but cannot be sure. Couldn’t get all 4 locos in photo, because of where I was, but the lead loco, facing opposite where I was, had his headlights and ditch lights on, but was just idling there, not moving.

BPRR 458 on AGR
Description:
Spotted this rare treat on AGR today: an ex SP SD45-2 still in active service wearing G&W Orange. Besides that, it is beyond rare to see a locomotive like that from up north in Mobile, AL! It I think came down from Thomasville, AL, most likely on AGR 411, and stayed in Mobile for a few days before headed back up north.

CSX Q521 at AKKA
Description:
While railfanning with a couple of my buddies, we decided to go to AKKA (AlaDocks) to see what was there. When we arrived, Q521 was in the midst of a crew change. Right when we got out, CSXT 5472 blew its horn 3 times and began to move backwards. We bolted to the crossing just in time to put up our tripods before the crossing gates activated and 5472 began accelerating. Once we set up tripods, 5472 began blowing for the crossing and rolled through LHF towards the bridge over the Chickasawbouge Drawbridge to get to the siding on the other side where Q521’s train was sitting. The reason for this is because the siding across the bridge is not accessible by foot or by road. Because of this, the train pulls into the siding, the power uncouples from the head end, and then runs across the bridge to tie down at AKKA for the crew change. Once the crew change has occurred, the new crew runs the power back across the bridge, couples up to their train, then runs back across the bridge and into Sibert Yard limits. After the power coupled up to Q521, I got a shot of them running across the bridge from the riverbank in the reeds before they disappeared into the distance.

Description:

WP Boxcar at Brookley
Description:
On a CSX train that had been at CSX’s Brookley Siding for over 24 hours, with an obvious issue of some sort, there was a WP Boxcar, something quite odd to see. WP (Western Pacific) was absorbed into the Union Pacific a long time ago, and not much remains from the fallen flag, so it is very rare to see a WP Boxcar, or any railcar for that matter, still with original WP reporting marks.

I was so lucky to say that I’ve seen this: the FRA INSPECTION TRAIN in Mobile! This came down here and only stayed one day before leaving north on CN. The only annoying thing about the consist was the CN SD75I leading the train, as that is pretty much the only type of CN locomotive that comes down here these days. It came down on CSX, then was transferred to CN, where it was attached to the 75I and parked in Alabama Export’s yard. This photo was taken with permission, and I was sure to be careful, as ALE was switching in the yard while I was taking photos, so I had to keep an eye out for moving railcars...

UP 1982 on Q605 (Photoshopped version)
Description:
This is 1 of 2 photoshopped versions where I took 3 different angles of UP 1982 and tried my best to blend them together. Honestly, it could be worse, as PhotoShop Mix could have botched this up way more than it did, and I’m pretty happy with the end results. The reason I didn’t get a full-body photo of UP 1982 was because of the trees at AKKA, as I couldn’t get a good shot from too far up close, since there was a swamp with something moving around in the water, and I didn’t want to mess with whatever it was. I also couldn’t back up too much, as the trees would block my shot of the unit. But really, I am grateful in the first place to have even seen this engine in Mobile, AL, since this was my first UP Heritage Unit!
