KCS 608 Southbound |
Description: |
Between August 1970 and August 1971, the Kansas City Southern operated unit coal trains from the Howe Coal Co. mine just north of Heavener, Arkansas to the railroad’s new coal export terminal at Port Arthur, Texas using a fleet of 75 six-axle 150-ton rotary-dump gondolas. Here is one of the last of these trains heading south at Bloomburg, Texas (milepost 507) with SD40's 608, 607 and 604 on the head end and 621 as the mid-train slave unit. The mine began working in 1968 and coal initially moved to New Orleans in 100-ton hopper cars for shipment to Japan, but the mine had some serious problems which created difficult mining conditions and these caused its early closure. The cars spent most of their career in Louisiana hauling woodchips to Baton Rouge. |

KCS Retirement |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern engineer and railfan Robert "Tillie" Blank and his wife were being honored on his retirement. The event was in the lunch room at WEST YARD, just outside of New Orleans. Bob went into engine service on the New Orleans Public Belt around 1940, and after a couple of moves spent most of his railroad career as an engineer on the Louisiana & Arkansas/Kansas City Southern. He was a regular engineer on the SOUTHERN BELLE during that train's later years. |

KCS Units |
Description: |
Late on a February afternoon these four locomotives were on the turntable lead at Minden, Louisiana. GP7 4160 is a locally-assigned unit, while F7A 75 and GP30's 4107 and 4101 had come up from Alexandria on train No. 66 and would be returning south on No. 65. The 75 would be renumbered 4062 in April 1978, just 14 months away; and would be out of service by the end of 1982. The geeps lasted a little longer! |

KCS Meet |
Description: |
KCS trains 55 - in the foreground - and 54 were parked across from one another on the Southern Railway's New Orleans Terminal Co. at the Labarre Road Grade crossing in suburban Metairie. No. 55 had GP40-2 799, F7B slug 4077 and GP40 786. It originated in Dallas and was on its way to the Southern's OLIVER YARD. No. 54 had GP40-2 797, F7B slug 4076 and GP38-2 4002. It originated at the Seaboard System's GENTILLY YARD here in New Orleans and was on its way to Dallas. A Southern crew had brought the train over the NOTCO five miles from L&N Junction, and the same crew would head back east with No. 55. A KCS station wagon has come over from their nearby WEST YARD with a road crew for No. 54, and would return to the yard with the crew off of No. 55. KCS and Southern cordiatd the departure of No. 54 from L&N Junction with the arrival of No. 55, so scenes like this occurred regularly. |

KCS 4117 |
Description: |
Back in 1984 transfer runs from the Kansas City Southern to the New Orleans Public Belt typically had 10-20 cars and were handled by a switch engine; but today the train had 40 loaded C&NW hoppers behind the 12 cars of mixed freight, so the railroad used one of the GP30's which were assigned to New Orleans for local work. The train is on the NOPB at Walnut Street. |

KCS 4223 |
Description: |
In 1985 the Kansas City Southern abandoned eight miles of track on its main line into New Orelans -- between Shrewsbury and Frellsen -- and began using trackage rights over the parallel Illinois Central Gulf; however, the KCS continued to serve a couple of customers on its old line across from New Orleans International Airport via a new connection that was built off of the ICG. KCS NW2 4223 is heading north on the ICG at Williams Boulevard in Kenner, on its way to serve the customers by the airport. The little train is passing the KENNER DEPOT, a shelter built by the City of Kenner in 1984 for a very short demonstration tour by a BRE-LEYLAND railbus. |

Description: |
Kansas City Southern SD40-2 652 was the railroad's first gray locomotive, completed at Shreveport at the beginning of April 1988; and when it was photographed outside the diesel shop at West Yard almost two years alter, gray units were still pretty uncommon. The other locomotives in this set of SD40-2's were snoot 690, the 649 and snoot 679. Quartets of 6-axle power were really unusual in New Orleans. |

KCS Victims |
Description: |
KCS AC4400CW 2040 and GP40-2 4813 were receiving attention at the railroad’s West Yard in New Orleans so they could be sent to the BNSF for permanent repairs. These had been the second and third units on KCS New Orleans-Kansas City train 10 when they were sideswiped by ATSF C40-8W 902 on BNSF Memphis-Houston train H-MEMPTR at 3AM on 20 December 2000. The lead unit on KCS 10 was AC4400CW 2018 and it was not damaged. The accident took place on the IC on the west side of the New Orleans area at Orleans Junction, and was caused by the IC crew on H-MEMPTR running a red signal. KCS 10 was exercising trackage rights over the IC and was crossing over from the northbound to the southbound main when its trailing units were struck by the BNSF train. H-MEMPTR was detouring over the IC from Memphis to New Orleans because of weather-related problems on the UP in Arkansas, so the BNSF was responsible for the repairs. ATSF 902 ended up lying on its left side, BNSF SD40M-2 7302 was partially derailed, and NS C40-9W 9126 sustained some damage. |

KCS SD60 756 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern SD60 756, Norfolk Southern (ex-Conrail) GP38-2 5343 and KCS SD40-2’s 643 and 648 were parked on the New Orleans Public Belt eastbound track near South Carrollton Avenue. The power was taking a train from the NOPB’s COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD - where it had been put together - back to the KCS WEST YARD; but the KCS couldn’t accept it, so the Belt crew had opened up the Burdette Street (right behind the locos) and Prytania Street grade crossings and left the train here. |

KCS GP40-2 LW 4710 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern GP40-2LW 4710 was photographed at WEST YARD, just outside of New Orleans. The locomotive had been built in September 1974 as Canadian National 9491, and it was later renumbered KCS 2908. It was one of 23 wide-nose CN units purchased by the KCS in 1996 and all of them had dynamic brakes added by the Livingston Rebuilt Center. |

KCS No. 54 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern train 54 was stopped at Marconi Drive in New Orleans. on the Norfolk Southern OUTER BELT. The train originated at the CSX GENTILLY YARD and operated over the NS for six miles to get to the KCS. The locomotives were GP40M-2 4767 along with SD60’s 739 and 732. The 4767 had been built as Western Pacific GP40 3503 and its number box looks odd because it originally had a Pyle-National single-beam headlight. |

KCS SD50 712 and SD40-2 656 |
Description: |
On Thursday morning 28 March 2002 Kansas City Southern northbound intermodal train No. 10 struck an 18-wheeler loaded with concrete piles at the Louisiana Concrete Products grade crossing in Baton Rouge. This photo was taken three days later, and shows the train’s first two engines parked on the BATON ROUGE MORNING ADVOCATE newspaper plant siding. The damage to the train’s lead unit, SD50 712, is obvious; while the second unit, SD40-2 656, had a gash on the engineer’s side of its fuel tank. The train’s third unit, SD40M-2 626, was unharmed, as was the crew. |
