Pinch-a-penny |
Description: |
One of the many chlorine cars that used to roll in to town when Pinch-a-Penny still hauled it in by rail. On a side note, the owner of Pinch-a-Penny, and former commissioner from this area, purchased the old Seaboard Air Line passenger depot, and turned it in to a very unsuccessful restaurant. It was later torn down in hopes of selling the land to developers during the most recent overdevelopment spree. |

In one of her many trips to Clearwater in 2005, I asked the crew about this mistake, and was told 6351's cab was damaged in a yard accident, and sent to Huntington to be replaced. They must not have thought the correction was necessary. |

The old SAL depot at Winter Haven still serves Amtrak, 4 times a day. A far cry from the elegance of the original 1926 station that stood just across the tracks. This little station was built in the 1940s to replace the much larger structure, and still manages to have a charm all its own. |

CSX 4306 |
Description: |
For quite a while it seemed the Clearwater Sub was to be the domain of the ex-Reading Company GP39-2s. That was all we saw for almost a year. Here CSX 4306 (ex-Reading Company 3401) spends a lazy Summer afternoon at the Clearwater Crew Office. When I was younger, this site was a junction between the SCL's former Atlantic Coast Line Trilby-St. Pete main, and former SAL's Richmond, VA to St. Petersburg main. From here South, CSX uses the old ACL, and from here North, the old SAL. Nothing remains of the old crossing and connecting spurs. The lines themselves in the opposite directions are now paved over as the Pinellas Trail. |
