Album Info:I was impressed with the steam locomotives on the MWCR. A 0-2-2-0 wheel arrangement Four paired cylinders with each pair driving a single axle with flanged drive wheels, a bull gear, and a middle cog wheel. The cylinders drive a pinion gear, which engages the main axle via the bull gear with a 5:1 ratio, so for every revolution of the pinion (four quartered cylinder strokes) the bull gear on the actual drive axle only makes 1/5 of a turn. That’s 20 powered cylinder strokes per one revolution of the drive axle; and double that because there are two drive axles! The whole railroad is inclined. Because of this, the steam locomotive never needs to provide power in a reverse direction. The valve motion that admits steam into each side of the cylinders is permanently set to admit the maximum amount of steam in the forward direction on every stroke. There is no Johnson Bar on MWCR steam locomotives because there is no need to either reverse the powered stroke nor modify the valve cut-off to admit less steam per stroke. Reversing the locomotive’s direction involves closing a valve on the dry pipe (which sends 148 PSI steam out to the cylinders) and opening a valve that admits air into the cylinders instead of pressurized steam. With no steam the locomotive rolls backward and the cylinders become air compressors, essentially a “jake brake” for the downhill run. For the return the passenger car on the train rolls downhill independently of the steam locomotive. The passenger car’s descent is controlled via a manual brake wheel that applies friction force to brake shoes. The brakeman attempts to keep the passenger car separated about 18” from the locomotive for the whole trip down the mountain. The MWCR does not want the added weight of the passenger car bearing against the locomotive for a downhill move although the locomotive serves as the safety/backup to catch passenger car should it start descending significantly faster than the locomotive’s rate of descent.

MWCR 2 on a "down" train, departing the summit of Mt. Washington
Title:  MWCR 2 on a "down" train, departing the summit of Mt. Washington
Description:  By opening / closing several valves while sitting at the summit station the locomotive is essentially converted into a large air compressor for the "down" trip. Steam pressure is kept up for a possible shove into a passing siding.

MWCR 9, Waumbek
Title:  MWCR 9, Waumbek
Description:  The Cog advertises that the 9:00 a.m. departure will be powered by an historic steam locomotive. On July 23, MWCR #9, Waumbek, drew the duty. Here it is after the run, being kept hot in case an extra section needed to be run in the afternoon. Otherwise, most of the trains nowadays are being powered by the new biodiesel interlopers.
