Description:  CN local approaches Stroebe Rd. as it pulls onto the former C&NW mainline while heading northeast at Stroebe, WI on 17 Mar. '14. It is difficult to tell from this angle, but the train was crossing over from the former SOO main to the former C&NW passing siding at Milepost 211. Train had pulled onto the SOO rails at Shawano Junction to allow a through freight to head southwest via the C&NW main. Normally the local could have waited on the C&NW passing siding, but a long string of cars had been spotted there for several days (that string of cars is visible curving to the left in the background). Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

Description:  CN local slows down to stop at the northeast end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction on 21 Mar. '14. Train was going to set out a string of cars here befove continuing on to service Little Chute and Kaukauna. I was starting to worry about the kid in blue standing by the 2nd telephone pole from the left; he was walking along the main line and seemed oblivious to the approaching local until it was rather close to him.

Description:  Running to spot one car at one of the local customers from the former CNW yard in Appleton. The train is about to cross the intersection of W. North Street/ W. Packard Street and N. Appeton Street. The green space, Packard Place, may have been the location of a grain elevator. I know there was one in the vicinity, but I cannot remember exactly where.

Until a couple of years ago, the old Thilmany mill would have loomed behind any train traversing these rails; the current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right.

Description:  CN local slowly crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the frigid Fox River as it prepares to service Expera Specialty Solutions mill (formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., from 1883 until 26 Jun. '13) at Kaukauna, WI on 4 Jan. '15. Railroad bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. A portion of the old Thilmany mill, saved from the wrecking ball, is visible behind the locomotives. The current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right. Kaukauna’s Veterans Memorial Bridge, the vertical lift bridge, reflects the last rays of the setting sun behind the remnants of the old mill.

The local had about 10 boxcars and two locomotives and may have been preparing to service the nearby Quad Graphics facility. I believe these locomotives were headed back to Fond du Lac after helping a container train up Byron Hill.
