CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-2-A 2903
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-2-A 2903 at Lincoln, Nebraska on January 31, 1954, photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 2903 was built by Baldwin in 1910 (c/n 34514) as a class S-2, rebuilt by the CB&Q in 1925 to class S-2-A, sold for scrap in December 1954. I have not figured out what is at the bottom of the stack, looks like paper or a hat, it's on the print, and it's not dirt.

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-2 2912
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-2 2912 at an unknown location on an unknown date, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Once upon a time you could purchase steam locomotive prints from a gentleman named Herbert L. Broadbelt. This was one of those photos, an unusual action photo in the Baldwin Locomotive Works negative collection (note the negative number in the lower right). It was undated and no location was noted. I roughed in Denver as the location because it looks like a major terminal, but does not look like Chicago. It could be Galesburg, Burlington, Omaha, or Kansas City, I don't know. Leave a comment if you know better. The date is also roughed in based on the build date (1910, c/n 34589), all steel cars pictured, a photo in the book, Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route, which shows this locomotive in 1933 with a different (Sunbeam, I believe) headlight in commuter service. Number 2912 was not rebuilt, but was retired in June 1935. It was one of fifty S-2's built by Baldwin for the CB&Q, assigned road numbers 2900-2949.

A soft image of Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 class S-2-A 2923 at Bigelow, Missouri on an unknown date in 1941, photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. The print was marked : Mail Train, Bissell, MO c. 1941. I could not find Bissell, MO, but did find Bigelow, MO and it was on the CB&Q, so that's what I chose. Number 2923 was built by Baldwin in 1910 (c/n 34686) as a class S-2, rebuilt by the CB&Q in 1927 to class S-2-A, sold for scrap in January 1951.

Erie 2924 K-5
Description:
Here we have an incredible Erie Railroad in Youngstown photo taken almost 75 years ago to this day! Its September 12, 1941 as this westbound Erie passenger train pauses downtown. The fireman is standing on the tender of Erie K-5 #2924 taking on water with the original St. Columba Cathedral looking over on top of the hill. Everything in this photo is gone. What looks to be six tracks in this photo - all gone today. St. Columba is gone as well, suffering a fire from a lightning strike in 1954. The new St. Columba, built in the same location, does not compare to this beautiful structure. Photo taken by G. A. Doeright of Poland, Ohio, from the James Pope collection.

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2960
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2960 on Train #9 at Sand Creek, Colorado on June 11, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. I'm hoping that Larkspur is close to Sand Creek, which is how the print is marked. Number 2960 was built by Baldwin in 1915 (c/n 42160) and sold for scrap in July 1952. At some point it acquired a Worthington feedwater heater, it wasn't delivered with one. Fifteen Class S-3 Pacific types were built by Baldwin in 1915 (road #'s 2950-2964) and an additional ten were built in 1918 (road #'s 2965-2974). Additionally, in 1922 two more S-3 design locomotives were built for the FW&DC (road #'s 556-557) and three for the C&S (road #'s 373-375, class F-3C). The C&S also acquired (around 1936) CB&Q 2970, 2973, and 2965, becoming C&S 370, 371, and 372 respectively, classed F-3B. The three Class F-3C locomotives built for the C&S had 69 inch drivers (as opposed to the 74 inch drivers on the CB&Q locomotives), which were better suited to C&S grades and resulted in a tractive force increase from the stock 42,400 lb. to 44,000 lb.. .

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2961
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2961, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. According to the February 1, 1952 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet, number 2961 was assigned to the Wymore Division. Number 2961 was built by Baldwin in 1915 (c/n 42161) and sold for scrap in December 1952. It appears to have been converted to burn oil, I do not know the date of that conversion.

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2969
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2969 at Cameron Junction, Missouri on October 19, 1950, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This appears to be a mixed train aand my guess is that 2969 was sent to rescue the train after road failure of the locomotive pictured behind the first two box cars. Pacific type 2969 was built by Baldwin in 1918 (c/n 48674) and was sold for scrap in July 1958.

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2974
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2974 at Denver, Colordao on July 23, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. This was the final Pacific type delivered by Baldwin to the CB&Q. Number 2974 was built in 1918 (c/n 49075) and sold for scrap in August 1951. Two unsubstantiated observations; it appears to be an oil burner, I don't believe it was delivered that way, and it appears to have an extended smokebox, possibly indicating that it was once a lignite coal burner.
