Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Interlocking Tower |
Description: |
A Chesapeake & Ohio freight passes underneath the nose of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern interlocking tower that once controlled the movements through this heavily used crossing by the NYC, Erie (later EL), CO, EJE and GTW. The tower was built by the EJ&E in 1924 and served as the main control until it was retired in 1999. It is a three-story, brick building measuring 25 feet long, 16 feet wide, and 30 feet tall. It has a concrete foundation and low pitched hipped roof. Slated for demolition, the Griffith Historical Society was able to save it by moving it across the GTW and EJ&E tracks just north of its original location. It now sits in the Griffith Historical Park in downtown Griffith. Northwest Indiana railroad fan John Strombeck caught this view while the grand tower still sat overlooking the mass of tracks and diamonds. |

Grand Trunk Western Watchman Shanty |
Description: |
With the maze of tracks from the NYC, EJE, CO, Erie, and GTW that once crossed Broad Street in downtown Griffith, the watchman's shanty was an important structure and the duites of the watchman was vital for the safety of all. Northwest Indiana rail fan John Strombeck caught the watchman inside the shanty as it sat between the GTW tracks (left side), EJE tracks (behind) and EL tracks (right side). It was a dangerous place to work! The shanty was saved from demolition and moved acroos the street and CO/EL tracks to the Griffith Historical Society property along with the GTW depot. |

The loco was retired in 1957 which means this photo may have been the last one before it was retired in this year. Supposedly, a year before (1956) it was renumbered to BO #104 according to the Baldwin records. Specs - |

BO 4-6-2 #5629 - Baltimore & Ohio alias |
Description: |
B&O 4-6-2 #5629 is on a fan trip but it's an alias of the true loco, GTW #5629. There is an interesting history how a GTW loco ends up being painted like a B&O loco. Built by ALCo-Schenectady in March of 1924 as Grand Trunk Western 4-6-2 Pacific #5629, the loco served the GTW for nearly 35 years before retirement in 1959. To save it from being scrapped, it was purchased by Richard Jensen of Chicago, IL, for its scrap value of $9,540.40. It was eventually moved to Hammond, Indiana and a local group of railroad enthusiasts restored it to running condition. Steamed up for the first time in October 1961, No. 5629 made its debut pulling a trip over the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad, for which it was repainted as a B&O as seen in this photo. Unfortunately, a dispute between Jansen and Metra where the loco was stored ended badly with the loco being scrapped on July 14, 1987. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

BO 4-6-2 #5629 alias |
Description: |
Posing as B&O 4-6-2 #5629 for a fan trip over the Chicago B&O lines is Grand Trunk Western #5629. It never appeared on the official B&O roster so is a "Cinderella" listing. Built by ALCo-Schenectady in March of 1924 as GTW 4-6-2 #5629, it was repainted as B&O #5629 for fan trips starting in 1961. This is long after it had retired from the GTW roster. A special crane was brought in to the Walkerton, Indiana yard just to load the coal for the fan trip and a water truck supplied the necessary water. Sadly, after a dispute between the owner, Richard Jensen, and Metra where it was stored late in the 1980's, it was sent to the scrapper on July, 14, 1987. . |

GTW 4-6-2 Pacific #5629 dressed up as B&O #5629 sits in the make-shift coaling yard in the former B&O Walkerton, Indiana yard. A crane was brought in to load the coal and a water truck supplied the water for the fan trip. Quite a sight to see a steam loco back in the northern part of Indiana. Note the wooden B&O caboose #X2125 to the side of the locomotive. It serves as a great vantage point to watch the coaling action! |
