Here is the front cover of the May-June 1963 issue of "Pennsy" magazine. The photographer is not identified. Photo Caption: "Conductor Walter A. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8558 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #8558 is an ES-15M built by GM-EMD in September of 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. |

CN 8846 |
Description: |
A CN container train passes a halted through freight and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. It looks like some new, concrete railroad ties will be installed on the main line soon. I've never seen these around here before. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen near the center of the scene. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye (partially visible to the right). Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, stands in the background to the left. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background to the right. Train had two locomotives, CN 2282 pulling as well as CN 8846 pushing. |

CN 9530 |
Description: |
CN 9530 approaches Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. These rails were laid by the WC ca. 1872-4 to form a connection from the C&NW main line to the M&N, which the WC leased effective 30 Nov. '73. According to History of the Wisconsin Central, 1941, this stretch was constructed after the lease, so probably that winter or early in 1874. However, a map of Menasha dated 1872 depicts a similar connecting track, but located farther east and connecting to the C&NW bridge. |

Description: |
A CN through freight and a local meet along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Apr. '22. Through freight had three locomotives, CN 3823 and NS 4384 pulling, as well as NS 4064 mid-train. Local was headed for Waupaca and had one locomotive, GTW 5812. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility and the Murer House are partially visible beyond the train. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left. |

Description: |
SOO 74673 was part of the consist of a CN through freight heading south along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Apr. '22. SOO 74673 sports the stalk of wheat paint scheme. The paint scheme is often referred to as "sheaf of wheat" or "shock of wheat," but one stalk does not a sheaf nor a shock make. I have also heard it referred to as "wheat stripe." It is always interesting to capture SOO equipment plying former SOO rails. If I had been paying attention, I could have captured a pair of these cars coupled together. |
