North Yard
Shortly after I found out that CN was selling the Grenada District to A&K Railroad Materials, I decided to come take a few shots of North Yard as I though this might be one of the last times I could look at it before it was either overgrown with vegitation or pulled up. This yard was built in 1915 and most of the switching at Grenada was done here. You could kick cars easy here, there is a slight downhill grade from where you pull the pin down to the clearance points of the yard tracks, then it started slightly uphill. You had to be carefull when kicking cars here, if the cars didn't couple up to another car or if you didn't ride the car and tie a brake, they would roll back out on you. The 9 tracks in this picture from left to right are: Ice Industries spur, New Track, Main Line, Hulburt, West Side, Old Main, Pass, East Side, Outside. The Old Main was the longest track in the yard, it would hold 52 cars. The Grenada main would hold 39 cars between Siren Crossing and the North Yard Switch. I have spent many nights here switching cars making up the cuts for the Memphis and Jackson locals as well as cuts for local industries.
