PRR 8612, AS-24M, 1965
Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8612, #8613, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8612 and #8613 are AS-24M's rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8612 was constructed in June of 1956, while #8613 was built in August of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that's passing under the 24th Street Bridge on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the helpers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. (#7 of 44)
