L&N 40514
L&N 40514 at Nashville, Tennessee on August 24, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This was shot from the Melrose Avenue overpass at the north end of Radnor Yard. This car is loaded with new brake shoes. Workers stationed at the orange chutes would place the new shoes in the chute as the car moved through the yard, depositing the new shoes on the ground for car knockers to use as replacements for worn shoes on arriving and departing freight cars.

James Hinman General Interesting job. Was this a daily occurance, or a large scale replacement of shoes? 7/9/2011 7:34:59 PM
Chuck Zeiler General I have no idea how often this occured. I was on a business trip and happened upon this scene. 7/10/2011 7:09:13 AM
willis ford General Wow That is so cool, I wish our yard master would let us do it like this. That is the best way to spreed brake shoes in a train yard for the carmen like me who actually change brake shoes, to have some laying next to the rail and out of the walking path. 7/26/2011 7:32:47 PM
