This is sometimes called the bridge to nowhere, because the other end of it has been torn down, so it just drops off. The right side was started but never completed. All of the piers for bridges of the Western Maryland Railway were originally built to accommodate double tracks in the event that the railroad had enough traffic to warrant a second line. The WMR was in constant competition with the B&O railroad, so the extra track ended up never being built. This bridge and particular section of this railroad was abandoned in 1975, after the WM merger with Chessie System, when it was determined that this rail line was redundant and not needed. |
