NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1953. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5844 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. #5844 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are pulling an 11-car passenger train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve and are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to Altoona and points East. Note that the "B" unit still sports a very-weathered version of its original livery: DGLE or "Dark Green Locomotive Enamel." |
