CR GG1 #4800
Here is slide taken by Conrail conductor Ken Taylor of the famous GG1 #4800 shortly after its retirement and move to the RR Museum of Pennsylvania. Built by GE in August of 1934 as a prototype for the Pennsylvania RR, this loco was originally #4899 but renumbered in November of 1934. It served with distinction throughout is 46 years of service to first PRR, then Penn Central and finally Conrail. After a full cosmetic restoration in 1982 to its 1935 paint scheme, it is now a prominent display inside the museum. According to the museum, this historic loco pulled the first electrically powered trail out of Washington, D.C. and set a speed record at 102 mph. Later it achieved a top speed of 128 mph during braking tests in 1935. It accumulated approximately 5 million miles of service and wore nine different major paint schemes during its lifetime.

Tom Beckett General This unit was known as "old rivets" for its, well, riveted carbody. The remaining 137 units had a welded outer jacket, making them look much more streamlined. This engine was painted in a Bicentennial scheme for that event in 1976. 5/4/2020 5:14:54 AM
