IC 4-8-2 #2409 - Illinois Central         
Big, long and powerful are the words to describe this ALCo-Schenectady built 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive. It was delivered to Illinois Central as their new #2409 (serial #64578) in October of 1923. Somewhere in its life, the IC shops rebuilt it and It was able to serve for a total of 32 years before being scrapped in 1955 when dieselization hit the IC roster. Rebuilt specs - 73.5" drivers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 28x28" cylinders, engine weight of 376,500 lb and tractive effort of 65,856 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.
