Grand Trunk Western Watchman Shanty
With the maze of tracks from the NYC, EJE, CO, Erie, and GTW that once crossed Broad Street in downtown Griffith, the watchman's shanty was an important structure and the duites of the watchman was vital for the safety of all. Northwest Indiana rail fan John Strombeck caught the watchman inside the shanty as it sat between the GTW tracks (left side), EJE tracks (behind) and EL tracks (right side). It was a dangerous place to work! The shanty was saved from demolition and moved acroos the street and CO/EL tracks to the Griffith Historical Society property along with the GTW depot.
