Here is an original photo by Douglas C. Jones that was taken just East of the Coaling Tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1957. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6743, an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during July of 1930 and retired in February of 1956 after 26 years of service. Note that the main driving rod has been removed in preparation for movement to the Recycling Center. Partially visible in the foreground is the East Altoona Turntable. In the background, empty freight cars are being processed via HOMER Tower from the Westbound Receiving Yard (at right) into the Westbound Classification Yard (at left). |
