Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in February of 1898, this 4-6-0 was originally Kansas City, Pittsburg & Gulf #361 but in 1900 became KCS #361. The loco lasted in service until being scrapped on June 12, 1940 in Pittsburgh, KS. Specs - class D5, 55" drivers, 180 psi, 20x26" cylinders, engine weight of 141,400 lb and tractive effort of 28,931 lb. No photographer was listed and the date is approximate. KCS 4-6-2 #803 - "The Flying Crow", Kansas City Southern |
| Description: |
An unknown photographer captured this 1912 built Alco-Schenectady Pacific-type loco hauling a long string of varnish on this day. It had tall 75" drivers to handle the passenger speeds and could generate a repectable boiler pressure of 200 psi to feed to its 24"x28" cylinders. It had an engine weight of 258,000 lb and produced a tractive effort of 36, 557, On the back of the photo was written -"Flying Crow" arriving Kansas City", SteamLocomotive.com explains that some of these engines had tuned air horns that emitted a crow's caw, which heralded the approach of the passenger varnish known as the "Flying Crow". On this service, they sported gold trim, lettering, and an emblem on the tender. The date is an approximation. |

In this badly deteriorating photo is a shot of the 1924 Alco-Brooks locomotive with a long string of freight behind it. The G-2 class loco had 57" drivers and developed a respectable 225 pse boiler pressure for its 26"x32" cylinders.The engine weight tipped the scales at 503,000 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 103,529 lb. No photographer listed and the date in 1933 is an approximation. |

KCS 0-8-0 #1010 - Kansas City Southern |
| Description: |
Thanks to Chuck Zeiler, the history of this loco now can be filled in after my fruitless search. The loco was built by Burnham, Williams & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in September of 1900 as KCS #425, a Vauclain compound 2-8-0 with 15.5 and 26x30" cylinders. It was rebuilt in August of 1906 to a simple arrangement with 21x30" cylinders and renumbered KCS #465. It was again rebuilt again in Sept 19, 1917, this time into an 0-8-0 configuration with 22x30" cylinders and renumbered KCS #1010. The loco continued in service as an 0-8-0 yard switcher until retirement and scrapping in January 22, 1953 at Pittsburg, KS. No photographer listed. Location and date are approximations. |

This oil burning locomotive was built by Alco-Richmond in 1913 as one of KCS class E-4's. It had 63" drivers and could generate a respectable 200 psi for its 26"x30" cylinders. Engine weight was 262,400 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 54, 742 lb. It appears to habe been rebuilt twice during its lifetime. This massive locomotive was delivered by Lima Locomotive Works in August of 1937 so this photo is a shot of the new loco. It had high stepping 70" drivers and created a massive 310 psi for its powerful 27"x34" cylinders. The engine weight was a whopping 509,000 lb and it generated a tractive effort of 93,302 lb. According to SteamLocomotives.com, this brute and the 9 others like it were assigned to the Northern Division since WWII had stopped the rail upgrade south of De Queen, Arkansas, to could handle the massive weight of these locos.
