Description:  Here is the tenth of 12 plates constituting the "Album of Pennsylvania R.R. Scenery." It was published and copyrighted in 1882 by Wittemann Brothers. 45 Murray Street. New York City, New York. Caption: "Mountain House, Cresson, Pa." This structure was moved here shortly after 1854. Before the completion of the PRR's Horseshoe Curve in 1854, that is, it was located near the eastern end of the New Portage Railroad/Allegheny Portage Railroad (i.e., in Duncansville) and the western end of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal (i.e., in Hollidaysburg).

Description:  Here is an article headlined "Terrible Explosion" that was published originally in the 15 December 1852 issue of Indiana's "Gazette." Partial Quotation: "On Tuesday last about one o'clock, P.M., a terrific scene occurred at the foot of Plane No. 6, A.P.R.R." Plane Number Six began at the summit near Cresson and sloped sharply downhill toward Duncansville. As such, it occurred near the Muleshoe Curve and the tunnel over US Route 22. Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "A Heavy Grade Near Summit on the Tyrone Div., Pennsylvania R.R. '45 Cars & 5 Engines.'" Photo by Mr. William H. Rau. Postmarked: 4 July 1909. Caption On Reverse: "The conquest of the Allegheny Mountains has been a problem for engineering skill. A heavily-loaded train, as shown in the picture, still requires an immense amount of motive power." Actually, this phouo was taken along the eastbound mainline tracks between Cresson and Gallitzin. It's on the Pittsburgh Division, therefore, not the Tyrone Division as indicated on the postal card.

Caption On Reverse: "The Monument commemorates the opening of the Old Portage Railroad on March 18, 1834.
