Big Boy 4010 |
| Description: |
Union Pacific 4010 rests in the yard at Laramie. The 1941-built unit was one of 20 such engines built in the 4884-1 series, numbered 4000-4019. These units differed slightly from the 4884-2 series of five engines (4020-4024) built in 1944 to fulfill wartime traffic demands. Both series of locomotives would meet their retirement in 1959, when UP would discontinue steam operations on the Wyoming Divison. 8 of the 25 would be preserved, although 4010 would not be so lucky. She would be cut up in Geneva, Utah, on May 24, 1963, one of the last Big Boys to be scrapped. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Rolling out of Town |
| Description: |
UP 4014 thunders past a switch as it departs the yard in Laramie in late 1956. 4014 is nearing the end of its service life, its first one, that is. In 2013, UP purchased the massive locomotive from the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California. Over the next 6 years, workers brought 4014 back to life in UPs Cheyenne backshops. 4014 returned to service in May of 2019 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad. After a tour of UP rails that year, 4014 returned to Cheyenne, just as the COVID-19 pandemic struck America. 4014 stayed in Cheyenne during the pandemic, but a new trip was planned for 2022. |

UP 4013 |
| Description: |
Big Boy 4013 negotiates yard trackage in Cheyenne in late August, 1958. The gargantuan Big Boy was the pinnacle of UP steam, with a power matched by few. The 4000s would become famous with railfans for their massive size and tremendous pulling power for this reason. However, no amount of fame would save 4013 from the impending end of steam. In 1959, the engine would pull its last train, and was withdrawn from service. For nearly four years the engine would sit stored in Cheyenne, before finally being cut up in April, 1963. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |
