GN 4-6-0 #1088 - Great Northern
Description:
Sadly, this hard working Great Northern ten wheeler #1088 was found sitting in the scrap line in the St Paul yard.. The loco started out in July of 1910 as Baldwin built Great Northern 4-6-0 #1088. After serving the Great Northern for nearly just 18 years, it was scrapped in December of 1928. Specs - class E-15, 73" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, modest engine weight of 177,000 lb and modest tractive effort of 29,190 lb. This is a Robert Graham photo but unfortunately, no date was given for this photo but since it looks like the scrap line, it was given 1928.

NP 2-6-2 #2457 - Northern Pacific
Description:
Fine example of a rebuild done by the Northern Pacific shops in Brainerd, MN in the late 1920's. The shops used a T class 2-6-2 built in 1906 by Alco-Brooks and superheated it along with other changes to improve tractive effort. New specs -reclassified as T-1, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21.5x28" cylinders, engine weight of 208,500 lb, tractive effort of 34,926 lb. No photographer listed for the photo.

Built by ALCo-Schenectady in November of 1914 as Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul #8178 (serial #54968), it was renumbered in 1938 to CMStP&P 738. The loco served until being sold in September of 1949. Specs - L2 class, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26 x 30" cylinders, engine weight of 275,000 lb, tractive effort of 54,723 lb. An unknown photographer took this photo.

Here's a good looking 1928 Baldwin built 0-8-0 working in the St Paul yard shuffling boxcars. This was one of only eight in the M-5 class ordered for the Omaha Road by its parent company Chicago & North Western and I believe the only 0-8-0 switchers CMO owned. Mr. Cooke listed as photographer.

Waiting for its next assignment is MILW 2-8-2 Mikado #314 while in the St Paul, MN yard. Built by Alco-Schenectady in July of 1919 as CMStP #8679, it was renumbered in 1938 to MILW 314. Ther loco was finally retired in January of 1951.Specs - L3 class, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, engine wt of 331,335 lb and tractive effort of 74,469 with booster. Description:
Great action shot of billowing clouds of smoke coming from Great Northern 4-6-2 Pacific type #1356. This loco is one of the rebuilds that the GN Shops did during the 1920's. They took older Baldwin E-14 class 4-6-0 ten wheelers and rebuilt them into 4-6-2's. The class was scrapped in the early 1950's. Original rebuilt specs - class H-5-s, Belpaire firebox, 73" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 23.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 282,800 lb and tractive effort of 40,511 lb. Built by Burnham, Wms & Company (Baldwin predecessor) in August of 1897, it was originally Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul Vauclain compound 4-6-0 ten wheeler #843. It didn't stay that way too long - renumbered in 4/1899 to CMStP #212, renumbered in 12/1905 to CMStP #850, renumbered in 1/1913 to CMStP #4012, simplified & renumbered in 6/1915 to CMStP 2262, renumbered in 7/1938 to CMStP&P #1197. The locos's last milage was on 8/22/1945 and it was scrapped later in October of 1945. Simplified specs - 63" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 19x26" cylinders, modest engine wt of 132,500 lb and modest tractive effort of 22,794 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

During its lifetime, Milwaukee Road #1187 has had 6 different numbers. Starting in December of 1895 when it was built by Baldwin (Burnham, Wms & Co), the loco was originally Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul Vauclain compound 4-6-0 ten wheeler #829 but it didn't stay that way for long - renumbered in 4/1899 to CMStP #202, renumbered in 11/1905 to CMStP #840, rebuilt & renumbered in 3/1913 to CMStP #2252, and finally renumbered in 7/1938 to CMStP&P #1187. After serving nearly 50 years, the loco was scrapped in October of 1945. After nearly 35 years of service, the loco was retired in Decemberl of 1953. Baldwin, 10/1923, nee-CMStP 2-8-2 #8396 (serial #57252, L-sb class) > renumbered in August of 1938 to MILW 496. The loco served for 28 years before being scrapped in October of 1951. This good looking Baldwin built 2-8-2 Mikado served the Milwaukee Road in dual roles for passenger and freight service through the years. A very versatile additon to the roster. Baldwin, 10/1923, nee-CMStP 2-8-2 #8396 (serial #57252, L-sb class) > renumbered in August of 1938 to MILW 496. The loco served for 28 years before being scrapped in October of 1951. GN 4-8-2 #2513 - Great Northern
Description:
Massive and fast are the two words to describe Great Northern 4-8-2 #2513. Built by Baldwin in September of 1923, it filled the need for a fast power source for the Great Northern's St Paul to Seattle leg of the Oriental Limited passenger service. After nearly 35 years of dedicated service, the locomoitve retired in April of 1958 and presumedly scrapped. Specs - class P-2, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 29x28" cylinders, engine weight of 271,600 lb and tractive effort of 54,840 lb. Unfortunately, no date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so approximate date and location was assigned.

Ignorant that it has been declared scrap, MILW 2-8-2 #486 still looks like it is ready to continue working. Unfrortunately, diesels have taken over the duites. This may have been the last photo ever taken of it before the scrapper's torch hit it. Baldwin, 9/1923, nee-CMStP 2-8-2 #8386 (serial #57175, L-sb class) > renumbered in August of 1938 to MILW 486. Long before a Fairbanks Morse diesle was assigned the number MILW 416, this 2-8-2 Mikado had the nonor of wearing it. Built by Baldwin in September of 1922 as MILW #8316, it was later renumbered in June of 1938 to MILW 416. Unfortunately when this photo was taken, the loco only had a few months left before retirement. The loco was eventually scrapped in December of 1954 after 32 years of service. Specs - class L-2b, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine wt of 292,770 lb, tractive effort of 54,723 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

A Great Northern 2-8-8-2 R1 steam engine in 1960 at the Superior WI roundhouse near Duluth in 1960.
Description:
The GN moved a few 2-8-8-2s from the Rocky Mtn district to the MN iron range around 1943. Steam ended on the GN with the fall grain rush of 1957, but this R1 steam engine sits near Duluth Mn in 1960. These articulated steam enginese were 119 feet long with the tender. They were about 6,300 HP. Todays deisels are about 4,400 HP.

CGW 66A & B Cow-calf - Chicago Great Western
Description:
Nice action view of the Chicago Great Western cow-calf pair in action. The pair was built by EMD in July of 1949 and later went to the CNW roster. The photo comes from an original negative taken by an unknown Chicago rail fan whose negative was incorrectly labeled as Pullman Junction. Several in his set of negatives were labeled incorrectly. With the help of several viewers and especially Robert Anderson (see comments below), the location has been re-labled as St. Paul, MN. The date is approxmiate. No photographer name was listed.
