ERIE 4-6-2 #2931 |
| Description: |
Nice action shot of Erie Pacific #2931 stopped at the passenger station in Hammond, IN. As a Hoosier, I'm always happy to post an Indiana related photo like this one! This is now a 16 mile Erie Lackawanna bicycle path starting near Crown Point and ending in downtown Hammond near this location. If you look carefully, you can see 3 watchtowers in a row down the track. Twenty of these "USRA heavy"-units were built by Baldwin and Alco-Richmond in 1919 for the Erie RR. All lasted into the early 1950's. Specifics - K5 class, 79" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylimders, engine weight of 306,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,925 lb. Lamar M. Kelley photo |

| Description: |
Another Hoosier loco! This 1906 Alco-Richmond built 4-4-2 "Atlantic type" locomotive poses next to the elevated gate tower in downtown Hammond, IN. This loco was one of only twenty 4-4-2 Atlantics to ever appear on the C&O roster but they did hold on for decades with thirteen of them remaining in use until 1949. Specs - class A-16, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, engine weight of 173,000 lb and tractive effort of 27,073. The class was rebuilt in 1920's with reduced boiler pressure but increased cylinder size. Net effect was the tractive effort remained largely the same. Happy to be able to post a C&O loco serving my Hoosier state!Arthur B. Johnson photo |

| Description: |
Fifteen of these were built by Lima in 1922 as a class H-6d with 63" drivers and developing 200 psi. One of only three preserved NKP 2-8-2's, this one was donated to Hammond, IN on 9/13/55 and is still there but in much worse shape. The photographer C.W. Burns noted on the photo back "One of the first engines given to a city for display. Now in sad shape, but are trying to fix it up. Also will fence it." August, 1970 reprint. |

| Description: |
This original NKP 511, renumbered later to #957, is another Brooks-Alco Mikado built in 8/1917 as a class H-5b. Twenty five were built and were extremely successful in the NKP service, setting the stage for demanding more Mikados for the railroad. Unfortunately it was sold for scrap on 8/20/61 to the Luntz Iron & Steel Co. This is another C.W. Burns photo. |

Originally built by GE for the Soviet Union in 1946, the deal was cancelled due to eroding relations between the countries. Chicago South Shore & South Bend bought 3 of the units. This is the sole surviving operational Little Joe now protected at the Illinois Rwy Museum in Union, IL. The slide lists Hammond as the location but almost looks like Burnham yard across the border. | Description: |
Finally have a Nickel Plate Road photo taken in my state of Indiana. This beautiful loco was built by Lima in October of 1922 and served the Nickel Plate until being retired in December of 1954. The loco was later dontaed on 9/13/1955 to the city of Hammond, IN, where is remained on display for many years as this photo shows. Just within the last few years, it was moved to Fort Wayne, IN for restoration by the same group that rebuilt NKP 765. Hope to see it running the rails again!!! No photographer was listed for this photo. |

Trolley Headache |
| Description: |
The electric connection between the cables and CSS #1100 has malfunctioned, and crews are now fixing it. Funnily enough, this trolley would later be converted into a wire maintenance car, how ironic. |

EL PA-1 #852 - Erie Lackawanna |
| Description: |
Interesting mixed passenger train near State Line heading toward Hammond, IN. Unusual boxcar at the head end of two different types of passenger cars. Note the "strong arm" switch bars running quite a distance to the far left of the photo. Alco built this loco in April of 1949 as Erie 852. It kept the same number after the merger. According to one online source, it was finally traded in to EMD in 1969. Unknown photographer. |

MON F3A #109 - Monon RR |
| Description: |
Built in March of 1948, the unit was renumbered several times before ending up #109. According to the info on the original negative, this was taken at Hammond, IN - can anyone comfirm this location, possibly based on whether the site had these long switch lever rods to the right? The photo was made from an original negative taken by an unknown Chicago photographer. |

Monon Turntable and Roundhouse |
| Description: |
Interesting view turntable and roundhouse from 1963. I believe the 75 foot, 150 ton turntable and the 10 stall turntable both date back to at least 1905. MON #22 sits just beyond the table and the iconic Hammond water tower can easily be seen in the far background. What appears to be a former heavyweight passenger car now appears to serve as a shed.
