BM 4-8-2 #4103 - Boston & Maine |
| Description: |
Built by Baldwin in March of 1935, this Boston & Maine 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive was given the name "Oliver Wendell Holmes" in the naming contest held when it was delivered to the B&M. The loco served until dieselization forced its sale to the B&O in 7/28/1947. The loco became BO 5650 and renumbered in 1956 to BO 750. It was dropped from the B&O roster in 1957. Specs - serial #61825, class R-1a, 73" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 18x31" cylinders, engine weight of 416,100 lb, tractive effort of 67,900 lb. Long and powerful, this Baldwin 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive was built in June of 1941 and was the heaviest Mountain type built in the US. "Black Arrow" was the winning entry in the naming contest that B&M staged when it was delievered. The loco served the B&M until dieselization ended its career. It was scrapped in September of 1956. Scrapped in September of 1953. |
