CNJ 1201 "Jersey Coast" - Central RR of New Jersey
Title:  CNJ 1201 "Jersey Coast" - Central RR of New Jersey
Description:  Nice color slide taken by WM J. Madden of the CNJ coach car "Jersey Coast". According to the Whippany RR Museum where this car now resides, it was built by Bethlehem Shipbuilding in 1927. The car sported a mahogany interior. Eventually it was retired in 1972 and purchased by a Morris County businessman who converted it into a private stationary lodging, seen here. He did alter the basic car by adding a railed-in open observation platform but finally put it in storage where it was vandalized and deteriorated. The Whippany RR Museum bought the stored car in 1994 and restored it back into the three color Blue Comet paint scheme (Jersey Cream, Packard Blue and Royal Blue) although this particular car never ran on the Blue Comet. Similar cars built the same did however run on the crack Blue Comet in its heyday.

Morristown & Erie "RW McEwan" (the first one)
Title:  Morristown & Erie "RW McEwan" (the first one)
Description:  M&E eastbound freight approaches Whippany station, passing O. Winston Link's ex-Rutland Combine Car parked off to the left. It appears that Al Holleuffer might be the engineer, but it could also be Frank McKenna. The RS1 is named after Richard McEwan, the first president of the M&E. This unit was built for the Navy in 1944, and was purchased second-hand by the M&E in 1963. This unit was later sold to the Valley Railroad in the mid 1980s and subsequently scrapped. (Another RS1, #21, was later purchased and is also named RW McEwan.)

LV F7A #578 - Lehigh Valley
Title:  LV F7A #578 - Lehigh Valley
Description:  This loco has an interesting history. Lehigh Valley #578 is an EMD F7A locomotive originally built for the Chicago & North Western Railroad as their #4087C in 1949. After various owners (CNW and NJT - eventually URHS & SLRG & TVRM), it was acquired by the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, leased to the Metro-North Railroad for passenger service and repainted in Lehigh Valley red and black livery for the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey. The loco was subsequently abandoned in Mississippi during Iowa Pacific Holdings's financial troubles and later rescued by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, where it was placed into storage for potential restoration. Rail fan G. Crouse took this nice roster shot.
