Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1960
Title:  Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1960
Description:  BWCX. Here is an original photo that was taken at the Berwind-White Railroad Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 12 April 1960. Shown here is the Vulcan 0-4-0 steam locomotive named "Nancy." The engineer is Bob Wingard. Alas, I do not know the name of the other man. The builder's plate indicates "Vulcan Locomotive Works ~ 1918." This locomotive was retired during the Winter of 1963-1964, so it served faithfully for around 46 years! Despite all of the thousands of steam engines that were built by and for the Pennsylvania Railroad, this was the last operating steam engine in Blair County! "Nancy" is now on exhibit at the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

In this photo, "Nancy" is shifting a highway-trailer-carrying flatcar owned by the Transport Leasing Company. The Car Shop Offices are located in the structure in the middle of the photo, while the smoke stack shows the location of the coal-fired Power Plant. Brush Mountain is visible in the distance.

Once upon a time, this was the middle leg of a fully-functioning "wye" that was connected on two ends to the Pennsylvania Railroad; the third leg (visible here behind "Nancy") led to the Berwind-White Car Shops.

Bob Wingard (the locomotive engineer) is shifting several TrailerTrain F-39C flatcars ~ which were actually built during 1957 at the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop, just across US Route 22. Description:  BWCX. Here is an original photo that I took at the Berwind-White Railroad Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, in April of 1960. Shown here is the steam locomotive called "Nancy." Bob Wingard (the locomotive engineer) is shifting one of the brass-bearing truck assemblies used only in the Shops from one location to another. Perhaps that is "Smitty" riding on the cabin steps. The track at the far right was the connecting link with the Pennsylvania Railroad. Once upon a time, there was a complete wye turn-around out there.

Title:  Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1963
Description:  BWCX. Here is an original photo that I took at the Berwind-White Railroad Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1963. Shown here is the steam locomotive called "Nancy." Bob Wingard (the locomotive engineer) is shifting one of the last USRA 55-ton hopper cars owned by the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company. The aluminum building on the left is the Paint Shop, the building in the middle is the Car Shop, and the building on the right is the original Machine Shop.

Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1964
Title:  Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1964
Description:  BWCX. Here is an original photo that I took at the Berwind-White Railroad Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 24 March 1964. Shown here is the steam locomotive called "Nancy." In this context, it looks like "The Little Engine That Could" has been relegated to the bone yard. All was not lost, however, as it was purchased and restored by Charles Hazelett of West Loop and eventually donated to the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The builders plate indicates "Vulcan ~ 1918," which means that "Nancy" served faithfully for 46 years!

Berwind-White, "Nancy," c. 1999
Title:  Berwind-White, "Nancy," c. 1999
Description:  BWCX. Here is an undated article from the "Altoona Mirror" about the Vulcan 1918 steam locomotive called "Nancy" and that it had been donated and moved to the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Two technical notes: the oil-burning headlamp has been replaced, but the bell seems to be missing.
