Album Info:Here are several original 35mm B&W photos of various Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. The photographer is not identified. The locomotive road numbers are provided when available. Also included are several photos of an exposition train and a car dumper in Toledo, Ohio. I purchased the negatives for all of these photos in a single eBay auction conducted by "FiftyFiftyCotton" on 3 September 2025.

Description:  Contax. Here is an original 35mm B&W photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6874, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during October of 1926 and retired in September of 1952 after 26 years of service. It's about to pass under the 12th Street Footbridge with a freight on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Description:  Contax. Here is an original 35mm B&W photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5418, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in February of 1956. It's about to pass under the 12th Street Footbridge with a passenger train that's stopping at the Station before proceeding up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Also visible at the right is PRR engine #244, a B-6SB (0-6-0) switcher built in Juniata in September of 1917 and retired in August of 1949.

In this context, it's providing shelter for a newly-arrived westbound passenger train and a group of folks who're moving to board the train. At the left are some of the Pennsylvania Railroad's 12th Street Car Shop buildings. Spanning the mainline tracks at the right is the 17th Street Bridge. At the far right, an unidentified PRR steam locomotive awaits its next assignment as a passenger train "snapper" up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where it will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona. Description:  Contax. Here is an original 35mm B&W photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Prominent at the left (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4335 and #4413. Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4335 was built as an I-1S in December of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in January of 1943, and retired in October of 1959. And #4413 was built as an I-1S in March of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in November of 1942, and retired in March of 1953. In this context, they're undergoing repairs at the PRR's Erecting & Machine Shop in Juniata.
