This is an unusual photo of the Rock Island shop goat at the Silvis, IL, roundhouse. From a previous photo I have posted about this loco, I know it appeared at the Iowa State Fair in 1938. The only informatiobn I could find online is it is a member of the class S-13 and possibly built by the Silvis Shops before 1900. If you have any information about this loco, please contact me. Alco-Brooks built this 2-8-0 Consolidation in April of 1903 originally as Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific #1635 (serial #28054, class 55A/C-39). In 1926, it was rebuilt as a switcher and renumbered CRIP 435. The loco was retired and scrapped in September of 1940. Rebuilt specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x30" cyinders, engine wt of 206,000 lb and tractive force of 39,181 lb. The photo was taken by rail fan Frank M. Naven and is now in my collection. |

| Description: |
Here is another photo of the powerful Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific 4-8-4 "Northern" type loco #5000, the first of 65 built in 1929-1930. Initially built in February of 1929 as CRIP #5000 with 67" drivers, it was rebuilt in the late 1930's and given 74" drivers for use with passenger trains. The loco was sold for scrap in June of 1951. Original specs - 69" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 434,000 lb and tractive effort of 66,620 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so approximates were used. |

This very well may have been the last picture taken of this Rock Island 2-10-2 locomotive as it was retired and sold for scrap just a couple months later than this photo. Alco-Brooks built this 2-10-2 Santa Fe type steam locomotive in October of 1920 as CRIP #3011 (serial # 62162). The loco served the Rock Island for almost 28 years before being retired and sold for scrap in October of 1948. Original specs - class 90A (N-83), 63" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 30x32" cylinders, engine wt of 391,000 lb and tractive force of 83,543 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |
